1. Start crate training a new puppy the same day you bring it home.
2. Let your puppy go potty outdoors before you put it in a crate.
3. Get a crate just big enough for your puppy to stand up and turn around. Switch to the next size up when needed.
4. Give a puppy a treat when it goes in the crate and again when it comes out.
5. Don’t say anything to your puppy once you put it in the crate.
6. Be prepared for pitiful howls at first and have ear plugs on hand.
7. Don’t give in. Don’t start making excuses to let it out.
